exhibitions bring the fascinating story of the timber industry to life
The Steam Powered Sawmill
From 2014 unfortunately we will not be able to operate the sawmill under steam due to various health & safety and heritage preservation reasons. The mill is still open to view and there are plans to animate the engine so it can still be seen ‘turning over’
Coming Soon is The Story of Ellanwood Mill – an audio presentation about this type of sawmill with an illustrated and illuminated panel in tandem with the automated engine and mill.
The engine is a Marshall of Gainsborough, built in 1942 to help produce timber in the Second World War. It is identical to the original engines which date from the late 1800’s.
