Some Red Squirrels from the Landmark Wood have been recruited as part of a major initiative to reintroduce them to parts of the Highlands where they have been extinct for many years.
Roy Dennis of the Highland Foundation for Wildlife was engaged by Lady Jane Rice (Wife of Composer Tim Rice) of Dundonnell Estate near Ullapool to examine the potential for re-establishing a population there. Once the research and permissions phase was completed the reintroductions began.
Roy approached us with a view to capturing some squirrels at Landmark where there is a healthy (and well fed!) population. Others were targeted in and around Carrbridge and surrounding communities.
Latest reports are that the squirrel reintroduction has been a great success with a good and increasing population now established. The operation was also seen as a trial for many other areas which could be established as Red Squirrel strongholds across the Highlands. These areas, being remote, and with no access for the non-native grey squirrels might eventually be the last refuges of Reds as disease brought in by the greys takes hold in the other parts of the country where greys are an expanding threat.
